North End Resource Guide

For our students, part of the North Bennet Street School experience includes getting to know more about the historical North End. We strongly encourage you to explore the neighborhood! To get you started, members of the NBSS community have provided some recommendations to consider.

Pizza

• Ernesto’s: “slices are huge, inexpensive, and veggie’s lover is delicious” (Claire Fruitman, Provost)
• Galleria Umberto: Sicilian-style; filled with neighborhood characters; cash only
• Regina Pizzeria: Since 1921
• Golden Goose: 2 large slices and a drink for $5

Italian Food

• Al Dente: quiet at lunchtime; delicious salads & soups
• Antico Forno: authentic; good for lunch or dinner w/friend or large group
• Bencotto: cozy & casual; wide array of apps, seafood, pizza, and pasta
• Bricco: see and be seen!
• Carmelina’s: great dinner spot
• Giacomo’s Ristorante: butternut squash ravioli, enough said
• Saraceno: best prices around; Neapoletana style

Sandwiches

• Boston Public Market: try Boston Pastrami or Boston Smoked Fish Company
• Bricco Salumeria: find the hidden alley and you’ll find excellent sandwiches
• Dino’s: subs are big enough for two
• Monica’s Pasta Shop: “mortadella panini w/pear mustard is so good” (Bryan McGrath, Student Life); also homemade pasta
• Pauli’s: great selection of subs, generous supporter of NBSS
• Salumeria Italiana: traditional Italian market and sandwich shop; right across the street!

Other Food

• Boston Public Market: such as Union Square Donuts, The Popover Lady, Noodle Lab
• The Boston Sail Loft: Waterside location w/seafood staples
• Faneuil Hall Marketplace: too many food options to mention!
• North Street Grille: nice sit-down experience; all-day breakfast/brunch
• Tenoch: Mexican food; extensive taco & torta menu at excellent price
• Union Oyster House: America’s oldest restaurant w/nearby historic cobblestone streets
• Not the North End but don’t forget about the Food Trucks on the Greenway!
• For healthy juices & smoothies: The Juicery on Salem St. or Mother Juice in the Boston Public Market

Sweets

• Bova’s Bakery: old-fashioned Italian goodies; also known for their bread; “cannoli are creamier than the others, and customer service is consistently good” (Sharon Stetson, Admissions)
• Modern Pastry: “cheap coffee & a gift-worthy cookie selection, with Italian attitude” (Kevin Derrick, Marketing), cash only
• Mike’s Pastry: known for their cannoli; no matter where you are in Boston you’ll see someone carrying the signature Mike’s to-go box with blue font and blue string bow!

Coffee & Tea

• Caffe Paradiso: “good, strong iced coffee & the best cannoli in North End” (Jamie Dergay, Financial Aid)
• Caffe Vittoria: “the most authentic Italian coffee” (Melissa Gallin, Development)
• Polcari’s Coffee: large supply of coffee beans
• Soluna Garden Farm: unique blends of tea served iced or hot; can also buy bulk
• Thinking Cup: they know your name; yummy scones; great lunch spot as well

• The New England Holocaust Memorial: open 24/7
• The Old North Church: so much history here; typically hosts NBSS graduation ceremony
• Paul Revere House: quick walk from school; 3 historic houses that you can tour
• Paul Revere Mall & Monument: “wonderful place for feeling like you’re far away” (Sarah Turner, President)

Hidden Gems

• Alba Produce: Parmenter St; fresh fruits & veggies
• Going Bananas: small grocer; juices & smoothies; deli counter in the back
• Golden Goose Market: $1 iced coffee; cheap pizza special; deli; wine, groceries, etc.
• Harborwalk from Battery Wharf to Rowe’s Wharf: “You can walk to several waterfront parks from school and breathe the sea air” (Barbara Rutkowski, Marketing)
• Kala Thai Cookery: “great prices, never disappointed” (Nate Abbe, Lead student worker); try pineapple fried rice!
• “Skinny House”: next to Copp’s Hill on 44 Hull St.; 10.4 ft at its widest point!
• Theo’s Cozy Corner: tight squeeze; breakfast & lunch; across from old NBSS location
