  • Preservation Carpentry students at work

    First year preservation carpentry students are shown here documenting the 1725 David Tilden House in Canton MA. Students use the information gathered in the field to make measured drawings. They also finished restoring 26 sashes from the First Parish Church in Dorchester and took a road trip to Marblehead MA to visit with preservation carpenter David Ottinger.

    Aimee Lee, a Korean-American artist and Fulbright scholar, leading a Hanji paper workshop at NBSS. The workshop was offered through the continuing education program.

  • Jim Croft visits bookbinding department

    Bookbinding students made medieval bindings under the direction of bookbinder Jim Croft. They began with wood boards which they cut and shaped by hand. The finished bindings also included hand-made brass clasps.

  • Workshop Highlights: Stone setting and a kids workshop

    Skills for jewelry making: faceted stone setting

    Stone setting is an important part of a bench jeweler's repertoire. Working with silver and bronze prong-heads, students set round, faceted stones using different shaped burs and cutting methods. The prerequisite for this class is silver soldering experience from NBSS Fundamentals of jewelry making I or the equivalent.

    Each adult and child team completes the process of measuring pieces, cutting parts to length, planing parts smooth and constructing the project. No tools or experience required. This class is appropriate for children ages 5 - 11 with an adult.

  • Busy days, Memorable moments


    The spring issue of
    Benchmarks takes a moment from the hectic construction schedule and busy academic year to reflect on the accomplishments of the school and its students and graduates.

  • Father-Son carpentry team

    Emanuel Silva, CA '93 and his son 8-year-old son Carter Silva (pictured) are both carpenters and both have articles that were recently published. Emanuel's article "Getting started with TPO roofing" was published in the Journal of Light Construction and Carter's article "Installing a fence post" was published in This is Carpentry.

  • NBSS Cabinet & Furniture making students hit the road

    Cabinet and furniture making students visited Nakashima Woodworker in New Hope, Pennsylvania and Winterthur in Delaware. At the Nakashima shop they were given a tour by Satoru Amagasu, the grandson of George Nakashima. At Winterthur, they met with curators and viewed an exhibit of Boston furniture (pictured).

  • Bookbinders in London

    Several bookbinding students and the head of the bookbinding program, Jeff Altepeter, traveled to England in February to explore historical book collections, meet suppliers and visit their fellow bookbinders across the pond. While staying in London, bookbinding students visited libraries housing historically significant collections and handled original binding structures. The British Library and the Bodlian in Oxford both granted the students private tours and pulled outstanding examples of bookbinding from their collections for students to examine.

    The students also met up with, and were generously hosted by, professional bookbinders in the London area including Bernard Middleton, Flora Ginn and Dominic Riley.

Richardson, The 1759 Vassal-Craigie-Longfellow House, considered among the finest Georgian Mansions in the nation and the 1689 Hooper-Lee-Nichols House, home of the Cambridge Historical Society.     Steven, a 1999 graduate of the NBSS, is the head of the preservation carpentry department. He worked as a preservation carpenter for Historic New England for six years and was an instructor for Boston Youthbuild's preservation carpentry program. During his tenure at Historic New England, he supervised NBSS students as summer interns and for two years he led a group of second-year NBSS students in the preservation of Pierce House in Dorchester, Massachusetts which earned him Historic New England's President's award.
